If you have lived in Cebu for more than five years and is a frequent visitor of the malls and their respective food halls, then you wouldn’t miss this food concept I am featuring today — none other than LEYLAM SHAWARMA! They’ve been in town for as long as I can remember!
I started living in Cebu in 2006 (you do the math) and I used to eat their food after class with my friends. Their food stalls are everywhere: in malls and food halls, in office and school canteens, even in neighboring municipalities of Cebu City. I think they have over 100 branches in the country! Their presence is no joke and I mean it.
Fast forward to 2017, the brand is presenting a new look with their latest branch — a spanking new in-line store at SM Seaside City (yes, that big circular mall south of Cebu city) dubbed as Leylam Deluxe. Complete with new logo and sophisticated color palette to boot, Leylam Deluxe is an upgrade from the Leylam Shawarma stalls we all loved.
LEYLAM mainly offers Shawarma, a Middle Eastern meat dish that’s slowly grilled on a spit. Once cooked, it is sliced into bite-size pieces topped with vegatables in a pita or flatbread (source). Leylam has their shawarma in three different versions: wrap, rice, and noodle.
The new store sports an industrial look using a mixture of materials such as red brick, G.I. sheet / stainless steel, wood, exposed metal pipes as lighting, and bare cement for the counter. They have an open area set-up so you can see how your food is being prepared. Should you wish to eat your food on the spot, they have bar seating for approx. 5-8 people..
This new branch still serves the good’ol favorites like the Shawarma wraps, rice, and noodle which is available in three flavors: beef, chicken, and shrimp. The ingredients are the same all throughout: diced carrots, green peas, corn kernels, cabbage, and slices of beef along with BBQ sauce, mayonnaise, or hot sauce.
My personal pick would have to be Beef Shawarma topped with egg, and mild spicy only. It’s good for when I take meals in between office tasks (and I mean, working lunch or dinner) since the serving is just right for me, especially with the egg. I have not tried the wrap version nor the noodle one but I’ll see if I can swing by one of their branches in the next few days, maybe I will have it.
